چکیده

We deene a Boolean circuit to be multilinear if the formal polynomial associated with it is multilinear as well. We consider the problem of computing the connectiv-ity function using circuits that are monotone and multilinear. Our main result is that monotone multilinear circuits for this function require exponential size. Since connectivity can be computed by monotone Boolean circuits within size O(n 3), our lower bound establishes that at least in the context of monotone computation, mul-tilinearity can be exponentially restrictive. As an application of our lower bound, we show that connectivity is not in mN L, thereby improving a recent result by Yao that connectivity is not in mN C 1 .

On Multilinearity and Skew-symmetry of Certain Symbols in Motivic Cohomology of Fields

The purpose of the present article is to show the multilinearity for symbols in Goodwillie-Lichtenbaum motivic complex in two cases. The first case shown is where the degree is equal to the weight. In this case, the motivic cohomology groups of a field are isomorphic to the Milnor’s K-groups as shown by Nesterenko-Suslin, Totaro and Suslin-Voevodsky for various motivic complexes, but we give an...

Nash Equilibria via Duality and Homological Selection

Cost functions in problems concerning the existence of Nash Equilibria are traditionally multilinear in the mixed strategies. The main aim of this paper is to relax the hypothesis of multilinearity. We use basic intersection theory, Poincaré Duality and the Dold-Thom Theorem to establish existence of Nash Equilibria under fairly general topological hypotheses. The Dold-Thom Theorem provides us ...

Radically Questioning the Principle of the Least Restrictive Alternative: A Reply to Nir Eyal; Comment on “Nudging by Shaming, Shaming by Nudging”

In his insightful editorial, Nir Eyal explores the connections between nudging and shaming. One upshot of his argument is that we should question the principle of the least restrictive alternative in public health and health policy. In this commentary, I maintain that Eyal’s argument undermines only a rather implausible version of the principle of the least restrictive alternative and I sketch ...

Introduction: Teaching medical professionalism is increasinglyacknowledged as an important aspect of medical education. The Professionalism Mini-Evaluation Exercise (P-MEX) is anassessment tool for evaluating medical professionalism, butno studies using it as a self-assessment instrument have beenreported. This paper reports on a preliminary investigation of theFinnish version of the P-MEX instr...

Simulation of Arithmetical Circuits by Branching Programs with Preservation of Constant Width and Syntactic Multilinearity

We study structural properties of restricted width arithmetical circuits. It is shown that syntactically multilinear arithmetical circuits of constant width can be efficiently simulated by syntactically multilinear algebraic branching programs of constant width, i.e. that sm-VSC ⊆ sm-VBWBP. Also, we obtain a direct characteriztion of poly-size arithmetical formulas in terms of multiplicatively ...
